Lots of new things at the Giro delle Dolomiti

For the 46th edition of the well-known cycling event, the non-profit association ASD Giro delle Dolomiti, which has been organizing the event since 1977, has come up with a new formula with five stages this year, which will run from Monday, July 24th to Friday, July 28th, 2023 without a day of rest become. And that is already a significant change for the next Giro delle Dolomiti, which attracts hundreds of enthusiastic participants from all parts of the world to Italy's northernmost province every year. “It's a kind of return to our roots. Only one section of each stage is timed - the mountain time trial. The time achieved counts towards the overall ranking. We also opted for a more compact formula without interruptions. This leaves it open to guests from outside whether they would like to stay and organize the weekend individually,” explains Bettina Ravanelli, the busy president of the ASD Giro delle Dolomiti. In fact, many enthusiasts from outside the province come to South Tyrol every year to take part in the Giro delle Dolomiti. The popularity on the international level is enormous and it should stay that way in the future. “Every day we will set off from the Bolzano Trade Fair, the logistical center of the event, towards the South Tyrolean and Trentino mountains. This year's stages are full of charm and offer participants the opportunity to admire unique landscapes while climbing the wonderful classic Dolomite passes and to immortalize their experiences through beautiful photos. The Giro d'Italia caravan has been on many of these climbs in recent years," said Ravanelli, who added: "We hope to welcome many participants again. Our team is very motivated and works with passion to make the 46th Giro delle Dolomiti an unforgettable experience for all cyclists who take part in our event in the last week of July." An event in which the cyclists Cover a whopping 503,5 kilometers and complete an altitude difference of 11.509 meters. Fiemme Valley and Sellaronda on the first two days The Giro delle Dolomiti 2023 begins on Monday, July 24th with the first stage into the Fiemme Valley. The “entry” is 87,3 kilometers long and has 1980 meters of elevation gain. Cyclists start from the Bolzano trade fair into the lowlands and from there climb up to the Fiemme Valley. You reach Cavalese and then begin the climb to the Lavazè Pass, where the timed section of this stage (10,4km/798hm) ends. The long descent through the Eggental to Bolzano completes the start. The next day, the queen stage of the top-class event begins: with a length of 159,8 kilometers and an altitude difference of 3400 meters, the circumnavigation of the Sellastock is the longest and most demanding section. Cyclists go from Bolzano to Wolkenstein in Val Gardena, where the mountain time trial to Sella Pass (10,4km/704hm) awaits them. But that's not all, because the Pordoi Pass, the Campolongo Pass and the Gardena Pass are also conquered on the same day. The Stelvio Pass, the Fedaia Pass and finally the Soltn Another amazing stage awaits the participants on Wednesday, July 26th, when the 63,7 kilometers and 1893 meters in altitude include the Stelvio Pass. From Bolzano, the participants are transferred by bus to Prad, where shortly after the start the mountain time trial (23,2 km/1808 hm) begins on the “Queen of the Alpine roads” to the crossing at 2757 meters above sea level. From here the participants reach the Umbrail Pass on the border between Italy and Switzerland. After a detour to the neighboring country, we return to the starting point via the Monastero Valley and finally take the bus to Bolzano. Another legendary pass at the foot of the highest mountain in the Dolomites will be tackled on Thursday, July 27th: the Fedaia Pass. On the 142-kilometer-long stage, which has a total elevation gain of 2898 meters, the participants climb from Bolzano to the Karerpass and reach the Fassa Valley in Trentino. You pass through Canazei and then head to Penia. The timed section (7,3km/504hm) begins there and ends at the dam of Lake Fedaia at the foot of the Marmolada. We return to the Talferstadt via the Carezza Pass and the Niger Pass. The fifth and final stage on Friday, July 28th is shorter and less demanding than the previous sections and represents a worthy conclusion to the 46th Giro delle Dolomiti. On the 51 kilometer long route with an altitude difference of 1338 meters, the participants will tackle the climb from Bolzano to San Genesio, where the last timed section (10,8km/942hm) will also take place.
