Before the eyes of Bonucci: Dallago wins at the Gardena Pass

The stage took the participants from 25 different nations from the Bolzano trade fair to Val Gardena, from where the Sellaronda tour was tackled in a clockwise direction. While Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno was able to defend the leader's jersey, there is a new overall leader in the women's category with Julia Jederelhauser from Allgäu. It was an extremely strenuous section for the cycling enthusiasts. After circling the Sellastock from the Bolzano trade fair, the bike compunters showed a length of 160,3 kilometers and an altitude of over 3300 meters. There were also two mountain time trials to complete. The first of these led from Plan de Gralba to the Gardena Pass, was 5,5 kilometers long and had an altitude difference of 236 meters. An ideal route for the young Christian Dallago from Bolzano, who ignited the turbo 500 meters before crossing the pass and broke out of the seven-man leading group. The 22-year-old, who successfully played football for FC Südtirol in his youth, prevailed in 11.58 minutes, six seconds ahead of the Spaniard Iraitz Goñi Diaz. And all this in front of the eyes of the newly crowned European champion Leonardo Bonucci, who happened to be at Val Gardena and patiently fulfilled many selfie requests. Third place went to the Sicilian Salvatore Busacca, who narrowly pushed past Eduard Rizzi from Sarner in the last few meters (both +12 seconds). Overall leader Thomas Gschnitzer controlled the action and finished seventh, 16 seconds behind Dallago. In the women's category, Julia Jederelhauser from Marktoberdorf was the first to cross the finish line. The 33-year-old doctor, who works for her employer – the St. Vinzenz Klinik Pfronten – completed the mountain time trial in 14.22 minutes. Seven seconds later, Daniela scratch from Karlsfeld in Bavaria reached the finish. Third place went to Francesca Sassani from Bolzano, who lost 16 seconds to Jederelhauser and thus lost the leader's jersey to her. Mazzurana has the greatest reserves of strength After a short refreshment, we went down from the Gardena Pass to Corvara, where the second mountain time trial (4,4 km/269 meters in altitude) on the Campolongo Pass took place a little later. Here, too, the same seven-man leading group stayed together for a long time before Luca Mazzurana from Bolzano, who now lives in Sweden, came out on top in 11.07 minutes. Goñi Diaz had to settle for second place again, this time three seconds behind. Dallago completed the podium, four seconds behind. Overall leader Gschnitzer landed in sixth place (+7 seconds) and leads the classification before the last mountain time trial on Friday with a lead of 1.09 minutes over Dallago. “Unless something really crazy happens, I think the die is already cast. Thomas Gschnitzer simply drove way too hard on Tuesday and today he was always able to keep up. I am thrilled with the Giro delle Dolomiti. The format is unique. Riding in a group gives you time to make friends, chat and enjoy the area. However, in the Granfondos that I usually take part in, you always go to the limit. I can really only recommend the Giro delle Dolomiti,” said Dallago. Everyelhauser with the double While there were two different winners among the men on Thursday, Julia Jederelhauser triumphed once again among the female cyclists at the Campolongo Pass. With a final time of 13.02 minutes, she took exactly half a minute off Francesca Sassani. Monika Dietl, the winner of the Giro delle Dolomiti in 2018 and 2019, took third place, 31 seconds behind. In the overall standings, Juwellhauser's lead over Sassani is 42 seconds. A lead that the Allgäu native would like to defend on Friday. “That would be the plan. I actually come from mountain running and I am also known among mountain bikers. This is my first race on a racing bike, so I'm surprised at how well it's going here," said Jederelhauser. Monika Dietl currently holds third place in the overall ranking, although she is already 2.21 minutes behind. The Giro delle Dolomiti continues on Friday with the fifth stage and promises to be particularly exciting because the dice are cast in the battle for the overall ranking. The entire section is 89,6 kilometers long (2173 meters in altitude) and leads from the Bolzano trade fair via Blumau and Tiers up to the Niger Pass, then towards Nova Levante and via Gummer and Karneid back to the Bozen trade fair. The 13,2 kilometer long mountain time trial with an altitude difference of 625 meters begins in St. Zyprian and ends at the Niger Pass. There is also a Giro Sprint up to Gummer (2 km/184 meters in altitude), but this does not count towards the overall ranking. On Saturday, the 44th Giro delle Dolomiti will conclude with the team time trial in the lowlands.
