Vuelta: Gaudu wins protest stage – Roglic continues in red

After 24 km, the 170-year-old from Groupama-FDJ had the stronger start when he reached the mountain in Alto de la Farrapona and gave the former Paris-Nice winner Marc Soler (Movistar) from Spain no chance. The red jersey was defended by the top favorite and Tour runner-up Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) after 5000 meters in altitude, who rolled into the finish at the same time as his closest competitor Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers). There was trouble before the start of the stage. After the race organizers' decision on Friday in favor of the new leader Roglic, the Ineos team led a protest from the field of drivers. The section on Saturday therefore started late. The day before, Roglic (31) took the red jersey of the overall leader. The Slovenian, who won the stage, benefited from a decision by the jury to rank the first eight riders at a distance from the rest of the field. Roglic thus gained the decisive three seconds on Carapaz, who had been leading until then. At the same time, Roglic and the Ecuadorian were in the lead before Saturday's stage, and because of the better individual results, the defending Vuelta champion officially went into the weekend as the front runner. The Ineos team felt just as “cheated” as the fourth-placed Brit Hugh Carthy’s Education First team.
