Vuelta: Yates makes overall victory virtually perfect

The 26-year-old from Team Mitchelton-Scott came third in the victory of local hero Enric Mas (Quick-Step Floors) on the decisive mountain stage and thus successfully defended the red jersey of the overall leader in the 73rd Tour of Spain.

Yates goes into the final stage on Sunday in Madrid with a 1:46 minute lead over stage winner Mas. As is the case on the final day of the Tour de France, the leader is traditionally no longer attacked.

Yates will thus continue the impressive winning streak of British professionals in the Grand Tours. The drivers from the United Kingdom will have won five major tours in a row on Sunday. In 2018, Chris Froome had previously won the Giro d'Italia, and Geraint Thomas won the Tour de France. There had never been three different winners from one country at the three major national tours in a previous season.

At the Giro, Simon Yates, wearing the overall leader's pink jersey, had a terrible collapse on the 19th stage, losing 39 minutes to Froome and ultimately finishing 21st in the final ranking. At the Vuelta he is now improving the family's best tour record - this was set by his twin brother Adam with fourth place in the 2016 Tour, and in Spain he was now Simon's noble helper.
