Tour Transalp: The South Tyroleans have their sights set on overall victory

The Eppan master rider Werner Weiss was unable to win his home stage, but together with his team partner Jörg Ludewig from Germany he will still be able to tackle tomorrow's final stage with a reassuring lead of 8.41 minutes. The duo came in second today, just 8/100 behind overall runners-up Peter Brommler and Heinz Sommer from Germany after a driving time of 4:24.39 hours. After yesterday's crash, the favorites Bernd Hornetz and Hanspeter Obwaller did not start again today in Aprica and ended the race prematurely.

“It was very cold today,” says Werner Weiss. “I no longer feel the lack of training due to my operation; my legs are rolling better day by day,” said the multiple overall winner. “And I have a great partner in Jörg Ludewig. I can learn a lot from the former street professional every day.”

Third victory of the day in a row for Illmer and van den Branden

In the women's race, Marina Illmer and Edith van den Branden achieved their fourth victory. It was their third in a row. The South Tyrolean-Belgian duo will no longer be able to take off their leader's jersey, because in the overall ranking the mountain specialists are in the lead with 103,50 minutes ahead of Beate Zanner and Nadja Prielig (D/A) before the final 1.625 km/31,48 hm. The day's winners completed the route in 4:57,47 hours.

“Today I was completely dependent on Marina,” says Edith Vander Brande from Belgium. “She set the pace and supported me in the crucial moments.” Trentino's Silvano Janes and Gabriele Valentini won the Grand Master race for the third time in a row. They needed 4:32.57 hours from Aprica via the Tonale Pass to Kaltern. Last year's winners, Marco Poier from Kurtin and Erwin Hickl from Germany, crossed the finish line in third place. Janes/Valentini are ahead in the category rankings with a lead of 11.30 minutes over Harry Nussbaumer and Peter Hafenrichter.

The seventh and final stage over 103,50 km/1.625 m altitude leads tomorrow from Kaltern to Arco.

The leading South Tyrolean teams are on the verge of overall victory after the sixth and penultimate stage from Aprica in the province of Sondrio to Kaltern. The last section tomorrow leads from Kaltern to Arco on Lake Garda.
