Tour Transalp: Kerschbaumer/Stecher climb onto the podium

In the Grand Masters category, where the participants must be at least 100 years old, Oswald Kerschbaumer from Val Gardena and Frowin Stecher from Vinschger took third place. They benefited from the disqualification of the Swiss Christoph Stähli and Ralph Sigg, who crossed the finish line first, but were subsequently given a five-minute time penalty for not stopping at a traffic light in St. Leonhard. “We met on the climb to the Jaufen a bit spent,” say the two South Tyroleans. “If we had taken it easy, we wouldn't have run out of energy at the end and we might have been able to do even better.” Kerschbaumer/Stecher are also in third place in the overall ranking of their category.

In the master category, Alberto Micheletti from Nalles and his partner Stefano Gavioli from Bolzano took eighth place. They lost three positions compared to the first stage. Trentino's Alessandro Degasperi and Massimo Barozzi came eleventh. Victory again went to Stefan Oettl and Wolfgang Hofmann from Germany.

Marcellina Dossi and Cinzia Bertoldi from Trentino took second place among the women. After winning the first stage, they continue to lead the overall standings with a lead of 40 seconds over today's winners Andrea Scharrer and Martina Stoiber from Germany.

The winners in the mixed category were the favorites Lisa Pleyer and Jörg Ludewig. Ludewig won the Masters rankings last year together with Werner Weiss from Eppan. The best South Tyroleans were Ruth Zemmer and Thomas Oberhollenzer from Team Vertical Brixen in ninth place.

The fastest of the day were Michael Kastinger and Klaus Steinkeller from Austria in 3:45:26 hours. They crossed the finish line 25 seconds ahead of Hans Peter Obwaller and Mathias Nothegger, who remain in the lead. The Kastellbeller Andreas Tappeiner turned 18 together with his German partner Adrian Fingerlin. “We are happy that we arrived safely in Sölden yesterday,” says the Vinschger native. Many top athletes were affected by the many falls on the rain-soaked road. This also applies to Eduard Rizzi from Sarner, who had to receive eight stitches and was no longer able to continue driving.

The third stage over 89,18 km and 2.237 m altitude leads tomorrow from Brixen via Gufidaun, Laion, Val Gardena and the Gardena Pass through the Val Badia to St.Vigil in Enneberg. A total of 22 South Tyroleans are taking part in the 12th Schwalbe TOUR Transalp. 1200 hobby bikers from 22 nations are registered to cross the Alps on racing bikes in teams of two. In seven daily stages they have to cover 821,90 km and overcome 19.318 meters of altitude and 19 passes.

In the 12-year Tour Transalp history, 25 South Tyrolean stage locations were on the program. Brixen will be visited by cyclists for the fifth time this year and St.Vigil for the sixth time. The competition starts in five categories: men, women, mixed, masters (men, together over 80 years old) and grandmasters (men, together over 100 years old). The ranking is based on stage and overall victory.
