Tears, mud & burgers in the car: The highlights of the Tour de France

IF YOU LOVE HIS BIKE, PUSH IT: The 24 percent gradient in La Planche des Belles Filles was too much for André Greipel. On the last few meters of the steep final ramp in the Vosges, the 37-year-old sprint veteran had to dismount and carry his bike across the finish line.

ATTACK ON TOURMALET: An attack one kilometer before the finish line on the legendary Tourmalet? Emanuel Buchmann dared. The 26-year-old Bora-hansgrohe professional started from the leading group and drove to victory - in the end he finished fourth, and one day later in Foix Prat d'Albis Buchmann came fourth again.

THIBAUT'S TEARS: The first French Tour victory since Bernard Hinault in 1985 was within reach. But then hopeful Thibaut Pinot suffered a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh. The captain of the Groupama-FDJ team had to end the tour in tears after he had shone with a victory on the Tourmalet in the Pyrenees.

NATIONAL HERO ALAPHILIPPE: Classic car specialist Julian Alaphilippe has become something of a national hero in recent weeks. The 14-year-old drove in yellow for 27 days, bravely defending it through the Pyrenees until he lost it on the Iseran. Alaphilippe still won the hearts of his compatriots: When a little boy was freezing in the cold of Valloire, the professional cyclist gave him his yellow jersey as a jacket.

MUD INSTEAD OF SPECTACULE: And suddenly there was a break in the Tour de France. On the 19th stage, a section had to be massively shortened for the first time since 1996. Heavy rain and hail showers as well as a mudslide made the descent from the Col de L'Iseran impassable. The weather didn't cooperate on the following day, a 130-kilometer stage from Albertville to Val Thorens: due to landslides, the course was shortened to 59,5 kilometers.

VAN GAAL’S DAILY RATION: The day in the team car of the Dutch cycling racing team Jumbo-Visma was particularly fun for former soccer coach Louis van Gaal. A video shows the 67-year-old Dutchman being handed three fresh hamburgers into the car: The tulip general generously distributed it to his fellow passengers and never stopped laughing.
