Two South Tyrolean overall victories and a podium finish at the Transalp 2013

1300 amateur cyclists from 30 nations, including seven South Tyroleans, took part in crossing the Alps on racing bikes. In seven days, the teams of two had to cover 888,92 km and 18.495 meters in altitude through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. The second stage was canceled due to bad weather.

With three out of six possible victories, Werner Weiss from Eppan and his partner, Jörg Ludewig from Germany, secured overall victory in the master class. For Weiss it was already the sixth TOUR Transalp victory. The duo also won the final stage and extended their lead in the overall standings to 12.13 minutes. The winners needed 23:25.29 hours to cross the Alps. For Weiss it was the last Transalp after nine years.

“I will remember wonderful experiences, especially the human encounters with my different partners and the many friends in the cycling scene,” says Werner Weiss somewhat wistfully. “The demands weren't very high at the beginning, but my legs rolled better day by day,” explains Weiss, who started the race with a significant training deficit. “With over 400.000 kilometers of cycling under my belt, I was able to make my small contribution,” says his partner Jörg Ludewig, the former road professional. “It was enough to win and we are happy.”

Marina Illmer and Edith Vanden Branden finished this year's TOUR Transalp in third place in the final section. But four wins and a second place were enough to win the Alpine crossing with a lead of 27.37 minutes over the second-placed team and a total time of 25:46.57 hours. This was Illmer's second overall victory in a row. Her partner from last year, Beate Zanner from Gera, came in second with the Austrian Nadja Prieling.

“It was again a very nice experience. The most difficult stage was that from Zernez over the Stelvio to Livigno? say Illmen and Van der Branden in unison. “Without Marina, I would have had a very difficult time in this stage race,” explains Edith Vanden Brande, the proven mountain specialist and record holder of the Ötztal Marathon, appreciatively.

Trentino's Silvano Janes and Gabriele Valentini left nothing to be desired on the last stage and won the Grand Master category with four wins and a total time of 24:10.55. Third place went to last year's winners, Marco Poier from Kurtining and the German Erwin Hickl, who lost six minutes to second place finishers Harry Nussbaumer and Peter Hafenrichter.

The 11th Tour Transalp ended today with two South Tyrolean overall victories and a third place. The seventh and final stage led from Kaltern over 103,50 km/1.625 m above sea level to Arco.
