After the Meran Grand Prix: The winner's interview

s+ looks back on the last few days with the racing team owner and talks to him about the big day with L'Estran's 4th victory in the Meran South Tyrol Grand Prix. What was going through your mind when L'Estran crossed the finish line as the winner? Devid Aichner: “That L'Estran and Josef Bartos achieved something that we all only dreamed of. There was an indescribable feeling of happiness.” How did you experience the last few days before the race? “There was a certain amount of pressure that steadily increased as the race got closer. The whole team was aware that we could do something that no one had ever done before in the 83-year history of the Grand Prix.” How did you experience the entire race? “There was a bad feeling for a long time. Our tactics only partially worked and the initial phase was very chaotic due to the slippery terrain. Only after the jump of the oxer, when L'Estran and Gangster De Coddes took over, did I feel calmer." Did doubts about victory arise over the course of the 6 minutes? "Yes. When First Of All started to attack L'Estran on the home straight, I had my doubts. But L'Estran wouldn't be L'Estran if he hadn't countered that attack too." They have already won 3 group races on Saturday. But what makes a victory in the Grand Prix special? “A win is always nice, but winning the Grand Prix is something very special. The whole atmosphere, the many friends who are cheering, the history of the race and its international reputation: all of this makes such a success unique for a South Tyrolean racing team owner.” You had 5 horses at the start: What are the results after the Grand Prix? “Gangster De Coddes has done a great job and I am convinced that he will one day follow in L'Estran's footsteps. Notti Magiche, my favorite horse, disappointed me, but the gelding has already achieved great things this season.” What does the victory mean for you and your father? “The whole family is always excited. For me and my father it is confirmation that we have done a lot of things right. And it is the reward for a long journey that was also paved with many disappointments.” They had a lot of bad luck with injuries with their horses. Have you also thought about quitting? “No, because we know that in equestrian sport happiness and disappointment go hand in hand.” How long will the Aichner racing stable remain involved in equestrian sport? “Probably for a long time. I don't think we will lose joy. And as long as our women have our backs, we will carry on. My son Noah also inherited this enthusiasm (pictured above on exceptional horse L'Estran).” Your son is already an enthusiastic rider. Could there soon be a jockey in the Aichner family? “I hope not, because I see the risks a jockey takes every day. But Noah is an enthusiastic rider and fan of Josef Bartos. Let’s see what happens.”
