Next death at Santa Anita Park

In the last of the 14 races of the highly prized Breeders' Cup, the four-year-old gelding Mongolian Groom injured his left hind leg so badly that he had to be put down. Since Christmas 2018, 37 horses have died at Santa Anita as a result of racing or training accidents.

Even before the $28 million race, animal rights activists had protested against the event. Breeders' Cup boss Craig Fravel defended the event, saying "everything humanly possible was done to prevent something from happening," he said. Nevertheless, the series of deaths continued.

Horse racing in the USA is therefore coming under further pressure. Before the Breeders' Cup, California US Senator Dianne Feinstein wrote in a letter to the regulator the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) of "a critical test for the future of horse racing in California and the United States." California Gov. Gavin Newsom called the deaths a “disgrace” and threatened to suspend the races.

That was in March Racing operations in Santa Anita temporarily shut down after 20 dead horses in the first 3 months of the year. Stricter rules were introduced regarding the use of medication and the use of the whip by jockeys. The incidents are also being investigated by the District Attorney's Office and the CHRB.

As the owner of the railway, the Stronach Group has come under heavy criticism. Numerous tests carried out on the track have so far produced no results. As the news magazine Der Spiegel reports, over 6000 racehorses have died in the USA in the past ten years.
