100 days until Rio 2016 – who is there, who is fighting for the ticket?

The fixed starters

Tania Cagnotto (diving): The 30-year-old from Bolzano will be competing in the five-ring games in Rio for the fifth time. As third place at the World Championships on the 3m board, she got her ticket in Kazan last year and also qualified for synchronized diving alongside Francesca Dallapè at the Olympic dress rehearsal in Rio in February as part of the World Cup. Cagnotto still has a four-year-old score to settle with the Olympics: In London, the star athlete came fourth twice and missed the precious metal she longed for by just a few tenths.

Petra Zublasing (sport shooting): The Eppan sports shooter was the first South Tyrolean to get her ticket to Rio. Zublasing will be at the start in the KK three-position fight as well as with the air rifle (10 m). At the general rehearsal in Rio a few days ago, Zublasing came fourth in the KK three-position fight. A good omen?

Simone Giannelli (volleyball): The Bolzano player is part of the Italian national team, which has already qualified. The Olympic squad has yet to be announced, but it would be hell if the young talent from the Talferstadt didn't have a place in it.

Andreas Seppi (tennis): The tennis professional from Kalter is currently number 41 in the world. When the world rankings are published on June 13th, the day after the French Open, Seppi must be in the top 50. Because he doesn't have any world ranking points to defend until the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, his start in Rio is almost certain. He himself puts his chance at 90 percent.

Eva Lechner (mountain bike): The best mountain biker in Italy also has her place in Rio almost fixed. Although the World Cup opener in Australia last weekend didn't go well (she finished 23rd after a fall), Eva Lechner will probably represent the Italian national team in Rio in August 2016.

Promising candidates:

Alex Schwazer (athletics): Admittedly, it won't be easy for Alex Schwazer. After the doping ban has expired, the walker from Kalch has exactly one chance to break the Olympic limit. He has to achieve this feat in two weeks, at the World Team Championships in Rome. However, the training performance of the 31-year-old, who has not competed in almost four years, is said to be phenomenal. If he can pull it off, then the Beijing Olympic champion over 50 km will probably also be at the start in Rio.

Laura Letrari (swimming): At the Italian Championships, Laura Letrari set a personal record with the fifth fastest time in the 100 m freestyle (55,30). This means she could be used in the freestyle relay at the European Championships in London. And if you swim the relay at the continental championships, then you can also dream of the 2016 Olympics. In all likelihood, the woman from Brixen will not be able to compete individually - even if some experts believe that Laura Letrari can reach the Olympic standard in the 200 m individual medley.

Candidates with a small chance:

Gerhard Kerschbaumer (mountain bike): At the World Cup opener in Cairns, Australia, the Verdinger took 23rd place. Behind Marco Aurelio Fontana (9th) and Luca Braidot (14th), Kerschbaumer was the third best “Azzurro”. Italy has three starting places, but the third ticket is currently still shaky. The chance to be there in Rio is alive - but "Gerri" has to really step on the gas in the next few weeks.

Manuel Quinziato (cycling): The man from Bolzano is highly valued by both the BMC Racing Team and the Italian national team because, as a classic “water carrier”, he always puts himself at the service of his colleagues. His participation in Rio 2016 will probably depend on the composition of the Italian team. The Italian Cycling Federation has six starting places available.

Lisa Fissneider (swimming): With the Italian championship title in the 200 m breaststroke, the woman from Kaltern made people sit up and take notice and secured a starting place for the European Championships in London (May 25th to 29th). There “Fiss” will try to reach the Olympic limit (2.24,9). The 21-year-old has another chance to secure her ticket to Rio at the Sette Colli meeting in Rome in June. Fissneider could also have a chance at the European Championships in the 100 meters – if the Italian association registers her for this race.

Candidates with a minimal chance:

Debora Vivarelli (table tennis): Debora Vivarelli, who is currently ranked 84th in the Olympic rankings, remains a small glimmer of hope heading into Rio.

Daniel Hofer (triathlon): If - to put it bluntly - he wins the World Cup in Cagliari on May 8th, then Daniel Hofer could force his way into one of the two quota places on the Italian national triathlon team. Otherwise, the two starting positions seem to have already been given to his teammates.

Karin Knapp (tennis): The Luttacher woman would have to collect a lot of points in the coming weeks in order to work her way up the world rankings (among the top 56) in order to qualify for Rio 2016. However, Karin Knapp is ailing again and recently had to cancel her participation in the WTA tournament in Morocco. The chance is minimal, but it is alive.

Hannes Kirchler (athletics): The start of the 2016 season was promising, most recently the Merano native threw the discus in La Jolla to 63,30 meters and cracked the European Championship standard. But it is also a fact that Kirchler has only reached the Olympic limit of 65 meters once in his career (65,01). You can be excited.

Silvia Weissteiner (athletics): She already achieved the Olympic standard in the marathon in Turin last year (Weissteiner set a new national record in 2:32.35), but the qualification criteria are not clearly defined by the national athletics association. The guest is also confident that she will reach the limit of over 5000 meters on the track by July.

Matthias Weger (canoe): He is paddling against two Austrians for the last Rio ticket at the European Championships in Liptovsky Mikulas (Slovakia) and at the World Cup in Ivrea. The 19-year-old from Meran has been competing for the Austrian Canoe Association since last year. His younger brother Jakob (17) has had his Olympic dream shattered because he is not competing at the European Championships. Italy will also determine its starters there.

Maicol Verzotto (diving): The man from Bolzano missed direct qualification at the World Cup in Rioals 19th by a few points. Now the man from Talferstadt has to hope that he is one of the successors. Maicol Verzotto won't find out whether things will work out with Rio until June. In the synchronized jumping with Francesco Dell'Uomo, however, Verzotto was not even able to fight for the Olympic ticket because his partner was injured before the decisive competition.

Raphaela Folie (volleyball): She was part of the Italian national team until last summer, then was sorted out and finally called up again. However, completely unexpectedly, she was not invited to the Olympic qualifying tournament in Japan on Tuesday. This reduces your chances of the Brazilian summer fairy tale to a minimum. Maybe there will still be a happy ending for the Missian, who played her best season in Serie A in the dress of semi-finalists Liu Jo Modena.
