14 South Tyroleans are taking on the Mediterranean Games

The Mediterranean Games are a major sporting event in which the nations bordering the Mediterranean take part. This year medals will be awarded in 33 disciplines. A total of 14 South Tyroleans are taking part in the title fights. The local badminton players are most strongly represented with four athletes (Katharina Fink, Judith Mair, Lukas Osele and Kevin Strobl). Three handball greats from South Tyrol, Anika Niederwieser, Monika Prünster and Martin Sonnerer, are also taking part in the games.

The Mediterranean Games were actually supposed to have taken place in Tarragona, in Catalonia, in 2017. However, financial difficulties caused by the political crisis at the time caused the games to be postponed for a year.

By the way: Italy takes first place in the all-time best list of the Mediterranean Games. The “Azzurri” athletes brought home a total of 1 medals. France is in second place by a huge margin with 2147 medals.

14 South Tyroleans are taking on the Mediterranean Games
