Russian NOK confirms positive B sample for curler Krushelnitsky

Pyeongchang (SID) The currently suspended Russian National Olympic Committee ROC has confirmed a positive B sample from curler Alexander Krushelnitsky for the banned heart drug meldonium. The ROC said this on Tuesday evening Pyeongchang time. “We deeply regret the incident,” the statement said. The ROC stressed that the Pyeongchang bronze medalist's meldonium concentration was "absolutely insignificant for any effect on the human body" and that previous tests on Krushelnitsky had been negative. The ROC concluded that the taking had occurred “unknowingly and not systematically.” There was no explanation as to how the substance could have entered the athlete's body, the committee wrote and announced a "comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident." The French news agency AFP, citing an unnamed source involved in the Krushelnitsky case, had previously reported that the curler had tested positive for meldonium on two days in a row. The case had still not been officially confirmed by the CAS on Tuesday at the time of the ROC publication. The CAS only announced on Monday that it was investigating the Russian. Apparently there has still not been a mandatory hearing for the suspected athlete in doping proceedings. Russian curling federation chief Dimitri Svishchev was quoted in domestic media as saying he would travel to Seoul for a trial on Thursday. The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee will meet on Saturday to discuss a possible lifting of the suspension of the Russian NOC before the closing ceremony on Sunday. The IOC has so far failed to provide an answer to the question of whether the Krushelnitsky case could constitute an exclusion criterion in this context. An IOC commission headed by executive member Nicole Hoevertsz is monitoring the "Olympic athletes from Russia" in Pyeongchang and is supposed to give the executive a recommendation for action.
