Beucher: “With every stroke of the stick, mistrust runs with it”

Frankfurt/Main (SID) Friedhelm Julius Beucher, President of the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS), has renewed his criticism of the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to allow selected Russian athletes to take part in the Paralympics in Pyeongchang as neutral athletes. “There are still too many question marks to make such a generous offer. In light of the new rehearsal scandal, new doubts are now being added,” said Beucher in the FAZ interview. “When the so-called neutral Paralympic athletes whiz past you, mistrust runs with every stroke of the stick, and you can't free yourself from that,” added the DBS boss after the recent experiences at the Nordic Para World Cup in Oberried. Beucher had hoped that the IPC would "renew the consistent decision from Rio, which is good for sports for disabled people, because there are still indications that doping offenses in Russia cannot be completely ruled out." At the 2016 Summer Paralympics, unlike the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the IPC excluded all Russian disabled athletes because of the state-controlled doping system. Now 30 to 35 Russian athletes are allowed to take part in the Games in South Korea (March 9-18) under the name “Neutral Paralympic Athletes (NPA)”. This, Beucher added, “does not correspond to my view of a consistent anti-doping course.” At the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia won the medal rankings with 80 gold, silver or bronze medals, clearly ahead of Germany (15). 19 athletes will be competing in Pyeongchang for the DBS.
