Bolzano fistball players dream of the first European Championship medal

On Friday, Italy's national team, which consists exclusively of SSV Bozen players, lost in the preliminary round against the "big three" Germany, Switzerland and Austria at the European Championships in Adelmannsfelden (Germany), the latter match only ended 1:2 . In the other preliminary group, Poland won all 5 games against the Czech Republic, Denmark, Serbia, the Netherlands and Belgium and thus fought their way to the quarter-finals against the fourth place in the other preliminary group, Italy.

Unlike on Friday, when the games were played in two winning sets, on Saturday they were scheduled for three winning sets. Nevertheless, all four quarter-final games at lunchtime were short-lived: just as Italy beat Poland 3-0 (11:7, 12:10, 11:4), Germany also needed to beat Serbia, Switzerland beat Denmark and Austria only had three sets against the Czech Republic to advance to the semi-finals.

Strong 2nd set in the semi-final against Germany In the first semi-final, Germany and Italy faced each other again in the afternoon. Thanks to the outstanding attacker Patrick Thomas, the first set went relatively quickly to the host at 11:3. In the second set, however, Bolzano's Armin Runer, Christian Scartezzini, Simon Prudenziati & Co. got a better grip on their opponents and, thanks to some great saves, kept up point for point - to the enthusiasm of the audience. Ultimately, the second section went to Germany by a narrow margin of 11:9. The hosts then won the third set again more clearly with 11:4.

Germany will therefore be in the final on Sunday (16 p.m.) with the chance to win its 20th European Championship title at the 14th European Fistball Championship. Italy, on the other hand, will play the game for third place at 14 p.m. – not for the first time: the Bolzano “Azzurri” have competed at European Championships 18 times so far, coming fourth 14 times and fifth four times. A European Championship medal is therefore undisputedly longed for. Incidentally, Sunday's games will be played in four winning sets. Small final against Austria Switzerland won the second semi-final in the evening against Austria with a surprisingly clear score of 3-0. The Swiss are therefore the challengers to defending champions and hosts Germany on Sunday. Austria, on the other hand, is the “Azzurri’s” opponent in the game for third place.

Firstly, they proved that the South Tyroleans have a chance against Austria in the preliminary round match on Friday by winning the first set. Secondly, a look back to the 2016 European Championships in Grieskirchen also gives hope: in the game for third place, also between Austria and Italy, the hosts were already 3-0 in sets ahead when the guests turned the tables to 2-3 came close and then narrowly had to admit defeat 2:4.
