CAS decision on Russia cases on Thursday

Lausanne (SID) The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce its decision on the Russia cases on Thursday. 39 Russian athletes had appealed against their lifelong Olympic bans. The so-called Oswald Commission had banned the athletes from all functions at the Olympic Games for life because they were involved in the doping scandal at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. The Court will make a brief statement at around 9.00 a.m. CET on Thursday at the main media center of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics (February 9-25). A detailed press release will then be published on the CAS website. The appeal hearings began on January 22nd. Key witness Grigory Rodchenkov and WADA special investigator Richard McLaren took part in the hearings. The former head of the Russian doping control laboratory and the Canadian law professor who bear primary responsibility for exposing the Russian state doping scandal were connected via video and telephone, respectively. Because of the “extraordinary size” of the hearings, the CAS had to outsource the negotiations. The hearings did not take place in the CAS villa in Lausanne as usual, but in the International Conference Center in Geneva. A total of 42 Russian athletes took part in the CAS. Initially, only 39 cases were dealt with; those of biathletes Yana Romanova, Olga Viluchina and Olga Saitseva were postponed. The three-member panel of judges also included the Augsburg legal scholar Christoph Vedder and the Munich lawyer Dirk-Reiner Martens. The hearings were not public. The IOC banned a total of 43 Russian athletes from participating in the Olympic Games for life. Only bobsledder Maxim Belugin, who came fourth in Sochi, did not file an appeal. The CAS opened two offices for the Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The Ad Hoc Court deals with all legal cases that arise during the Games and has been a permanent institution since 1996. A second CAS court decides on all doping cases and has been part of the facility since the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.
