DBS with 19 athletes to the Paralympics

Munich (SID) Led by para-skier Anna Schaffelhuber, 19 athletes are competing for the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) at the Paralympics in Pyeongchang (March 9th to 18th). The nomination committee of the National Paralympic Committee decided this on Tuesday. In addition to the ten women and nine men, there are four accompanying runners in the sports of Para Alpine skiing and Para Nordic skiing. "We will send a powerful team to South Korea. It is a good mix of experienced athletes who have already proven their capabilities, as well as new faces and young talents," said DBS Vice President Karl Quade. Nine athletes are celebrating their Paralympics debut. He hopes, added the Chef de Mission, "for clean games; incidents like those in Sochi four years ago must not be allowed to happen again." It was only on Monday that the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decided to maintain the suspension of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC). However, selected Russian disabled athletes are allowed to compete under a neutral flag. In Sochi in 2014, Russia clearly won the medal rankings with 80 gold, silver or bronze medals, ahead of Germany (15). Four years ago, Schaffelhuber from TSV Bayerbach was the most successful German athlete with five gold medals. In Russia, the DBS had 13 athletes there. Quade did not want to announce a medal target for Pyeongchang. In addition to Schaffelhuber, he also counted the alpine runners Anna-Lena Forster (Radolfzell) and Andrea Rothfuß (Mitteltal) as well as in the Nordic area Andrea Eskau (Magdeburg), Martin Fleig (Freiburg) and Anja Wicker (Stuttgart) among the medal candidates. Around 670 athletes from around 45 nations will take part in the games in South Korea. There are 80 medals in six sports (alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, wheelchair curling, sledge ice hockey and snowboarding). The German team is not represented in sledge ice hockey and snowboarding.
