The underdog dethrones the world champion

On New Year's Day, the 49-year-old Scot dethroned last year's winner Michael van Gerwen thanks to a 7:3 in a high-class final and thus successfully took revenge for the defeat against the Dutch in the 2014 World Cup final. “I had the feeling beforehand that it was my turn. That's unbelievable," said Wright after his triumph on Sky Sports: "Van Gerwen is a great player, but now I'm actually world champion."
