The ski cross elite is now coming to San Candido

On Saturday, December 1,4nd, the international athletes will fight for a place in the final on a 30 km long slope equipped with around 22 obstacles such as jumps, bumps and steep curves. Promotion takes place in the knockout system and the final round takes place one day later. Construction of the route will begin on December 15th.

Since stricter safety measures apply this year, the route had to be slightly modified compared to previous years. “Due to the fatal accident in Grindelwald last year (in which the Canadian Nick Zoricic was killed, editor's note), the international association has tightened the safety measures, which is why we had to change the route. The slope will now be longer, which is especially great for the spectators, who will get more out of the race,” explained ex-ski racer and course manager Kurt Sulzenbacher.

Last year's winners from Canada, Kelsey Serva and her compatriot Brady Leman, as well as the Austrian Andreas Matt, the Russian Egor Korotkow and the two Swiss Fanny Smith and Patrick Gasser have already announced their participation.

Five South Tyroleans at the start in San Candido But the domestic World Cup is definitely a highlight of the season for the four-member “Azzurri” A team, three quarters of which are South Tyroleans. While Diego Castellaz (Feltre) and Marco Tomasi from Bolzano have been part of the national team for a long time, Stephan Miribung from Val Badia and the former Ski World Cup athlete Stefan Thanei from Burgeis were included for the first time this season. In Innichen, the two South Tyroleans from the “Futur Fisi” team, Debora Pixner from the Passeier Valley and Sabine Wolfsgruber from Gais, will also be sent into the race.

“We trained a lot this summer. But since I only started my so-called career last year, I don't have much racing experience in ski cross yet. It is therefore difficult to assess where I am at the moment. Nevertheless, I hope for good results, especially at the World Cup in San Candido. Although it's a bit irritating, the most interesting thing about ski cross is that four of you are sent into the race at the same time and compete head-to-head," said Thanei at the press conference in Bolzano at the beginning of December.

This year, for the first time, the event in “Little Siberia”, as the organizers themselves called it, does not have to compete with the Alpine Ski World Cups in Val Gardena and Alta Badia, as these were held a week earlier. And ski cross fans can also count on the event in the coming years, as it has been guaranteed until 2015.

This weekend Innichen will be the venue for a Ski Cross World Cup for the fourth time in a row. There will be a women's and a men's race. The event is also the only stop on Italian soil in the FIS Ski Cross World Cup.
