The Premier League participants have been determined

The Premier League of Darts has been an integral part of the PDC calendar for many years and is a highlight for all participating players. The appeal probably comes from the fact that only a very limited number of athletes are allowed to take part. Until last year, 10 players always took part in the tournament. Due to the change in mode this season, there will only be 8 in the future. The first four in the Order of Merit of the PDC (financial world rankings) have a fixed right to start. These include Gerwyn Price, reigning world champion Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen and James Wade. The PDC has now also announced who the four other participants will be. Unsurprisingly, World Cup finalist Michael Smith made it. World Cup semi-finalist Gary Anderson and reigning Premier League winner Jonny Clayton also qualified. The only surprise will probably be the Englishman Joe Cullen, who failed in the third round at the World Cup in December last year. In addition to the number of participants, the mode of the tournament has also been changed. Traditionally, the tournament was played in a league format (with subsequent playoffs for the best 4). Now there are still “game days” on which the professionals compete against each other, but on each of these dates a mini-tournament is played in knockout mode in which all 8 participants play. Depending on the result, the players receive a different number of points, which are included in the final table. There are 5 points for a win, 3 points for the finalist and 2 points for reaching the semi-finals. The four players with the most points after 16 match days traditionally reach the final four.
