Doping doctor Mark. S. sentenced to over 4 years in prison

The Munich II Regional Court found the Erfurt sports doctor guilty of 24 cases of using doping methods and two cases of unauthorized marketing of medicines. The court also imposed a professional ban on Mark S. for three years and a fine of 158.000 euros. In their plea, the public prosecutor's office had called for five and a half years' imprisonment; the defense considered a sentence of three years to be appropriate. The process, which lasted almost four months, was the first major “stress test” for the anti-doping law passed in 2015. The co-defendants were also convicted. Dirk Q. received two years and four months of probation, and nurse Diana S. received one year and four months of probation. The paramedic Sven M. (328 days of 20 euros each) and Ansgard S., father of Mark S. (280 daily rates of 35 euros each), escaped with fines. Operation Aderlass: A huge doping network On February 27, 2019, raids took place at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld and in Germany as part of Operation Aderlass. Mark S. has been in custody since then and the time will count towards his prison sentence. A total of 23 athletes from eight countries were involved. Among those affected were prominent sporting events such as the 2014, 2016 and 2018 Olympic Games, the 2018 Tour de France, the 2016 and 2018 Giro d'Italia, the 2017 Vuelta, the 2017 Nordic World Ski Championships and other various cycling tours and winter sports events.
