Doping case confirmed: Russian bobsleigh pilot excluded from Olympics

Pyeongchang (SID) Russian bobsleigh pilot Nadezhda Sergeyeva has been banned from the Winter Olympics because of doping. This was stated by the anti-doping panel of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Pyeongchang. Sergeyeva was found guilty of doping with the stimulant trimetazidine. The 30-year-old admitted the violation. Sergejewa took twelfth place in the two-man competition together with pusher Anastasia Kocherschova (30). It is the fourth doping case in Pyeongchang, two of which involve athletes from the “Olympic Athletes from Russia”. Before Sergeyeva, the Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky was caught with meldonium. Also affected were the Japanese short tracker Kei Saito, who had used a banned diuretic, and the Slovenian ice hockey player Ziga Jeglic, who was found to have taken a banned asthma medication. The executive branch of the International Olympic Committee will meet on Saturday evening to discuss whether the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) will be lifted and Russia will be allowed to take part in the closing ceremony on Sunday under its own flag. It is unclear whether the second Russian doping case in Pyeongchang already represents an exclusion criterion for the IOC.
