A visit to South Tyrol with obstacles

It was time for a visit again. Crossing the border at the Karawanken Tunnel, briefly through East Tyrol and then to South Tyrol. Well, I could have had better weather-wise, but there's nothing you can do about that and there hasn't been any rain for a long time. So don't complain. Even a cloudburst cannot diminish the anticipation. And I don't have to fear anything or anyone when I visit my friends in South Tyrol. I have been vaccinated, twice and have written proof of this.

For technical reasons, I did not receive any digital proof in Slovenia (where Biontech/Pfitzer sneaked into my body), but only a written confirmation that I had received my dose properly and well. Twice at the prescribed interval and still valid. The visiting program is as always. A snack in one of the many beautiful restaurants in the Isarco Valley. A glass of wine and great conversation. There is always a lot going on in all of our lives and around our lives. Discussions about sports Politics is always an issue. The most recent elections in Germany, the regional elections in Italy. The trends, the tendencies, the possible changes and much more. Sport, of course, is often the focus. Especially this year, in which the Italians have achieved more success than they have for a long time, and South Tyrolean athletes also helped a lot, as I am proudly reported.

Volleyball is even discussed intensively here. No wonder, given these results. The men became European champions with South Tyrolean playmaker Simone Giannelli and the women also became European champions with Raphaela Folie. And the five gold medals at the Olympics are always on the table. Even Juve's wave of bankruptcies fades into the background, although the last game in the Champions League gives hope again, I'm told. Have you already been vaccinated? But more than others, another topic takes center stage. Vaccinate. Are you already? You already have? This is how almost every evening begins. If the answer is positive, the next question comes: What kind of vaccine did you get? The pros and cons are discussed, with almost everyone agreeing: only if we all get vaccinated will we be able to fight this unholy enemy and perhaps we will get the pandemic under control. When the weather was even better than it is at the moment, we were able to discuss this together outside, because this is where the problem begins. Now it's got me.

I was not allowed to enter a restaurant because I could not show a “Green Pass” in my cell phone. It was explained to me that my written confirmation was not sufficient. Being vaccinated twice with proof in paper form no longer counts in our digital world. The fact that there were anti-vaccination people around me before, when we met outside of indoor spaces, makes me pretty stunned now that I'm basically ostracized, because we, the sensible and vaccinated people, are among those who speak angelic tongues at our friends people who are completely against vaccination. We've already talked our heads off and have already had a few small successes, because every single person we convert is a help in the fight against the epidemic. Danger of trenches forming We have always avoided seeing the anti-vaccination activists in our circle of friends as enemies. This seems extremely important to me, because there is a very real danger of social division. Diversity of opinion, a core aspect of democracy, is at risk. Two blocks are created. The vaccinated and the unvaccinated. Ditches are opening up. Cracks also arise across the circle of friends. Tolerance is now required, and we, who have been vaccinated twice, are required to do so to a greater extent than others who shirk social responsibility through their refusal. Relationships are at stake. All of us who have already been vaccinated are fighting for it. It probably won't be worth it to us.

Yes, I'm apparently no longer allowed to go to a bar in South Tyrol despite my two vaccinations. I sincerely hope that everyone responsible will take care of this uncertain situation, especially since it is not a nice thing for the innkeepers either. I felt how uncomfortable the owner of a really nice restaurant in Brixen felt when she asked me to leave. Not to mention the sales, because I was looking forward to a good dinner. What remains? I have to put on a thick down jacket, sit under a parasol, which in this case serves as an umbrella, and don't forget the scarf so that my voice doesn't suffer. If the rules don't become clear, then I'm looking at an extremely cold and uncomfortable winter. It doesn't help that my heart always feels so warm when I come to South Tyrol.
