It's nice that there are still reliable coordinates in life. They provide security and even security because they are predictable. The risk is minimized. What was expected happens. This is what we need in these uncertain times, when the political caste mainly issues rules about how and what we should do to save ourselves and the world. Happy whistling in the forest is neither appropriate nor desired, which is why the result of this strange song competition, grandly known as the “ESC song contest”, is reassuring. As expected, we, the Germans, came last again. To the point where every beep gets stuck in our throats. In the last four years, our singing-loving representatives came second to last twice and last twice. Well, if the band that should bring us points this time is called “Lord of the Lost”, you shouldn’t be surprised. And the title isn't exactly a savior either. It's called "Blood and Glitter". (“Blood and Glitter”). No matter how you personally feel about this dark rock band's truly lost show: it has once again become clear that we have once again been given a European lesson. We just didn't get any points. Three only from the German jury, with Katja Ebstein as a member, and 15 from the audience, who didn't get much out of the band members' wild twitching and screaming. Of course, it's a bit mean, because many performances weren't much better. Different perhaps, but also dull and often just loud. Basically, it's more of a show with light effects, ballet-like jumping moves and gymnastic contortions. The winning title "Tatoo" by the Swede Loreen wasn't exactly a revelation and won't be immortalized in our ears. “Sing to whom singing is given,” goes a saying by Ludwig Uhland from 1812, and even then it is not about sounds, but rather it is to be understood as instructions on how poems should be written. This is where the musical odyssey begins. Punished in Liverpool Of course, it hurts and pains us, who like to sing happy songs, especially when the mood is good, that we simply no longer hit the right note compared to Europe. The punishment in Liverpool, of all places where the Beatles were born, is already systematic. We are increasingly perceived as a country of know-it-alls. The raised index finger is the trademark. We are needed, but we are no longer loved, if that was ever the case. And we have almost completely lost our qualitative values: “Made in Germany” used to be a seal of quality. Europe and the world now know that Germany doesn't get too much baked goods anymore. Large projects such as airports, train stations, highways or good rail networks can sometimes take two decades. Digitalization is still a foreign word and wind power is still a mild breeze. The relationship with many of our neighbors is also tense. Charm offensives like those recently with France are cries for help. We are “lost”. A nice song would be really good for us in these difficult times, when anyone who doesn't install a new heating system immediately is called a traitor to climate protection. And anyone who drives a comfortable small SUV is already branded as the sole culprit for melting glaciers and rising sea levels. Perhaps the time would have been ripe for a thoughtful song from Germany and not, as we experienced, with a cry for death. He'll get out early enough. A bit of peace. I would have liked that like back in 1982, when Nicole presented us with a simple message. We are not as demanding as many people believe. “A little peace, a little dreaming. And that people don't cry so often. A little peace, a little love. That I will never lose hope again.” It was a winning song back then and would have brought us a lot of honor today and would certainly have given us more points than the dark performance at a time when there was war in Europe. A guitar, a beautiful voice, good lyrics that inspire your thoughts and capture the spirit of the times: these were the ingredients for a successful performance back then. The magic word was modesty. But that would have required a lot of courage at a time when shouting is becoming fashionable again and sensible arguments are lost in the noise of a minority. In the end, let's see it from a sporting point of view. Of course we are nibbling at the defeat, but we will fight. And be it with dream ship captain Florian Silbereisen next year.
