Ice Climbing World Cup: Rabenstein is ready

Really everyone who has a reputation in the ice climbing sport will come together in Rabenstein in the Upper Passeier Valley when they fight for victory for the first time ever in an ice climbing World Cup in South Tyrol on Saturday and Sunday. Starting with the two reigning world champions in difficult climbing: the Russian Alexey Tomilov and the Meraner Angelika Rainer. Or the winners of the last World Cup stage in Saas Fee, Switzerland, namely Maxim Tomilov and Maria Tolokonina (both Russia).

Former world champions Heeyong Park (South Korea) and Anna Gallyamova (Russia), who won the ICEFIGHT in Rabenstein last year, will also not miss the competition. Also at the start is the two-time former world champion Markus Bendler from Schwendt in North Tyrol, who has already been on the top step of the podium three times at the foot of the Timmelsjoch. Of course, the elite of speed climbing are also at the start. A total of around 130 ice climbers from 17 nations will come to South Tyrol.

The weather demanded everything from the organizers The fact that there is an ice climbing world cup in the Passeier Valley is primarily thanks to the hard-working OK team around Reinhard Graf. They have organized the competition over the past four years so that it has gained an excellent reputation in the scene. In addition, the Eisturm Rabenstein association had a competent and skilful negotiating partner with the international climbing association UIAA in the form of the Alpine Club. Together, the mammoth World Cup project was landed in autumn 2012.

The OK team has not only had to deal with many organizational tasks in the last few weeks. The weather at the beginning of January, which was far too warm, got Reinhard Graf and his team into serious difficulties. The foehn melted the ice giant into a steel and concrete skeleton in just a few days.

Because it got noticeably colder again around January 10th and the OK team from then on produced ice around the clock, building and working on the tower, perhaps the most beautiful but certainly most demanding artificial ice climbing facility in the world was ready just in time for the start of the competition this Saturday, January 26th and will push the ice acrobats to their own limits.

“The best ice climbers in the world can come to Rabenstein. Everything is ready. We have done everything we can to ensure that we will be a good host from Friday to Sunday. Now we wish every athlete that they can perform at their best and that the many spectators are offered a spectacular competition. “I’m really happy that it’s finally starting,” says OC boss Reinhard Graf.

Opening on Friday at the Thermenplatz in Meran

The Ice Climbing World Cup will kick off on Friday with a big party at the Thermenplatz in Merano. In addition to the opening ceremony from 17 p.m. with lots of music, including a performance by Doggy Dorfmann, and a colorful show program (fashion show, public climbing, show competition), there will be a draw for the starting numbers between 18 and 19 p.m. The qualification for the difficulty competition will then take place on Saturday, January 26th from 9 a.m. The women's semi-finals will take place at 15 p.m., before the speed climbing qualification takes place at 19 p.m.

Sunday, January 27th begins at 8.30:13 a.m. with the semi-finals in the men's difficult climbing. An hour later, the women's speed final takes place. At 15 p.m. the best ice climbers will take center stage in the final of the difficult climbing. The two-day mega event concludes with the men's speed final at XNUMX p.m.

“A lot of ice climbing fans have come to Rabenstein in recent years. By hosting a World Cup, we hope that even more spectators will find their way to us in the Passeier Valley.
