Ice Climbing World Championships in Rabenstein: It starts in 100 days

In Sölden, just a few kilometers as the crow flies from Rabenstein, the Alpine Ski World Cup begins this weekend with the first two giant slaloms of the 2014/15 season. In Rabenstein you have to wait a little longer until the highlight of this winter. From Wednesday there are still exactly 100 days until the Ice Climbing World Championships begin in the lower Passeier Valley.

From January 30th to February 1st, 2015, the world's best ice climbers will demonstrate their climbing skills for three days. Local hero Angelika Rainer & Co. are in action on one of the most demanding artificial ice climbing facilities in the world. And since the multifunctional building with changing rooms, a restaurant, garages, material depots, offices and conference room was opened in December 2013, the town of 230 people has been offering everything that makes an international ice climbing hotspot and makes the hearts of top athletes beat faster .

Experienced organizers

Preparations are in full swing just over three months before the major event. “The rough planning has been completed so far. We have already done a lot of preparatory work in the summer to ensure that everything runs smoothly at the World Cup. The atmosphere in our team is great, but there is also great interest among the public. I am often asked about the World Cup. This is a very good sign because it means that the Passeier Valley supports our event. And of course that makes us very proud,” explains OK boss Reinhard Graf.

Although Rabenstein is organizing a world championship for the first time, it is already very experienced in international ice climbing when it comes to organizing and hosting major events. From 2009 to 2012, the ICEFIGHT was held four times in a row. Although the competition was not an official World Cup stage, everyone who was significant in the ice climbing scene took part in this invitational competition. In 2013, the ICEFIGHT became a UIAA World Cup stage. After the successful premiere, the second edition and thus the World Cup dress rehearsal in February of this year had to be canceled due to the amount of fresh snow. What the optimistic OK team interprets as a good omen for the World Cup anyway. Because as the saying goes: botched dress rehearsal, successful premiere.
