Bitter: “Blech” again for Carolina Kostner & Co.

On Sunday, Kostner led Italy close to the top three. Only one point separated the “Azzurri” from the podium. In the free skating final on Monday, however, both Matteo Rizzo, the 3-year-old from Val Gardena and the pair skaters Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte each had to settle for fourth place. This meant they positioned themselves at the bottom of the podium in the overall ranking. With 31 points, Italy was six points behind the third-placed Americans.

Kostner scored a total of 134 points with her free program. Better were the outstanding Alina Zagitova from Russia with 158,08 points, as well as the American Mirai Nagasu (137,53) and the Canadian Gabrielle Daleman (137,14).

Gold premiere for Canada In the end, Daleman and her teammates were able to celebrate gold. Four years after the premiere defeat against arch-rivals Russia, Canada's figure skating team has won the Olympic gold medal in the team competition for the first time. The triumph of the “Maple Leaves” was an unexpected start-to-finish victory. From the first short program onwards, they dominated the competition and consistently expanded their lead. Unlike their rivals, they relied on team spirit in the still relatively new Olympic competition; none of the top stars spared themselves for the traditional individual competitions that began on Wednesday. Former world champions Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir (ice dancing) as well as Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford (pairs skating) also took to the ice.

For the Japanese, however, Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, for example, was completely absent, while world champion Yevgenia Medvedeeva only competed in the short program for the Olympic athletes from Russia. Without the ice dancing world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, France did not even manage to qualify for the medals. Kostner with a nine-day break After a rest day on Tuesday, the Olympic figure skating competitions will continue on Wednesday (10.00:02.00 a.m. local time/21:XNUMX a.m. CET) with the pairs short program.
