Big stage for fistball players: Kaltern presents the European Championships 2020

It wasn't even three weeks ago that South Tyrol's fistball players caused a stir historic fifth place at the World Cup in Switzerland for a sensation, now this fascinating fringe sport wants to draw attention to itself within the country's borders. The reason for this is the European Championships, which will be held from July 2nd to 4th in Altenburg/Kaltern. “We played a season with mega results, Euro 2020 will be a milestone for us, especially as it coincides with a generational change in our team. “We are not one of the absolute top nations, but we are no longer a blatant outsider,” says captain Simon Prudenziati.

“We are expecting several thousand spectators” OK boss Rudi Seifert Prudenziati himself - like the rest of the Italian national team - is a player for SSV Bozen. “Other associations draw from countless clubs, whereas here we only have one team. But with the Euro we want to arouse enthusiasm and attract new players,” hopes gaming operations manager Georg Meran. The experienced OC boss Rudi Seifert agreed with him at the press conference: “The World Cup has shown that Italy is now playing at a very good level and can definitely make its contribution to a sporting spectacle. Anyone who comes to Kaltern will be thrilled. In any case, we are expecting several thousand spectators from near and far. Tickets are now available." The world champion as a big draw The organizers' planning began around three years ago and is now being stepped up significantly so that everything runs like clockwork on the three tournament days in July. To date, ten nations have registered for Euro 2020, including world champions Germany and other top teams such as Austria and Switzerland. The OK team receives active support from the Kalterer Tourismusverein. Its president Sighard Rainer also wants to set an example: “Kaltern is known for ice hockey and football, why shouldn’t we also make a name for ourselves as a fistball stronghold? I think it’s great that we have the chance to promote this fringe sport and I’m hoping for a big boost – not just in Kaltern, but throughout South Tyrol.”

Next summer, the fistball world will look to South Tyrol when the 2020 European Champion will be crowned in Überetsch. The major event was officially presented on Tuesday in the Lido on Lake Kaltern.
