“Haus des Sports” is celebrating its 20th anniversary

The President of the National Olympic Committee CONI, Giovanni Malagò, also insisted on coming to Bolzano: “I always enjoy coming to South Tyrol because you are a role model, your athletes are world class, you have the best organizers and so on Your structures are the envy of all of Italy. I am pleased to be able to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our establishment here today and I am sure that I will be here again after the Winter Olympics in South Korea to celebrate our medals,” promised Malagò.

Former state governor Luis Durnwalder and Heinz Gutweniger recalled that the search for a common home for the associations began at the end of the 80s. Ultimately the choice fell on the Hotel Vajolet. In 1997 the renovation of the hotel was completed and handed over to CONI. In addition to the offices of the specialist sports associations, the building has a large meeting hall and rooms that serve as an archive and storage area for sports equipment. Every year, over 300 meetings, meetings, seminars, courses, etc. are held in the “House of Sports”. In 2016, the state of South Tyrol renovated the facility, converted it into a climate house B, installed a new methane gas heating system, adapted the electrical systems and enlarged the entrance area and made it wheelchair accessible. This house is also very important for South Tyrolean sport from a financial perspective, because the state covers all extraordinary expenses, while the regular maintenance as well as electricity and cleaning expenses are borne by CONI.

Regional Sports Councilor Martha Stocker, Bolzano Mayor Renzo Caramaschi and Government Commissioner Vito Cosumano also praised this facility. As representatives of the athletes, Gutweniger invited six South Tyrolean flag bearers at the Olympic Games and Paralympics as guests of honor: the lugers Paul Hildgartner and Gerda Weissensteiner, the downhill skier Isolde Kostner and the Paralympians Bruno Oberhammer, Dorothea Agetle and Florian Planker.

20 CONI awards were also presented as part of the 13th anniversary celebration. The Silver CONI Star went to FMI President Marco Bolzonello and the Moto Club Neumarkt for their tireless commitment to South Tyrolean sport, while the Bronze Stars went to Dietmar Eisenstecken, Franco Grano, Luciano Innocenti, Ardelio Michielli, Josef Rieder, Franco Riedi, Lorenzo Spinelli , Vincenzo Stacchetti, Enrico Wegher, the marksmen Eppan and Franz Haller went.

After the ceremony in Bolzano, Giovanni Malagò paid a visit to the “Claudia de Medici” sports high school in Mals before traveling on to Zagreb, where he will take part in the meeting of the European Olympic Committees on Friday.
