Historical fencers from South Tyrol cause a sensation

Fencer Ruben Ragno from Fortezza won third place in the Rapier and Dagger discipline in the first qualifying round of the Italian Historical Fencing Championship in Bologna. The South Tyrolean also received the valuable Fair Play award for the fairness and sportsmanship he showed during the fights.

"I am very satisfied with the result. It is a great honor to bring South Tyrol onto the podium. Now I’m concentrating on the next competitions,” says Ruben Ragno. He adds: “I would like to thank all my teammates from Historical Fencing Dolomites and fencing master Lauria from the Bozen Fencing Club for their trust.”

Marta Mattiello, Olympic fencer from Lombardy and member of the Dolomites, took an excellent fourth place in the women's “Rapier”. It was her first appearance in historical fencing. Marco Scalet from Primiero was stopped in the quarterfinals of the “Rapier and Dagger” category in his second competition appearance, but ended up in the top eight. Dolomites unites athletes from 3 provinces “We are proud of the results achieved. They are proof that the strategy is right,” says Dolomiten president and foil teacher Luca Basile. “We are a young club, but the hard training work is already starting to pay off.”

In Bologna, a total of 140 athletes competed in 5 disciplines and over 1000 fights over the two days of competition. Historical fencing Dolomites was with 6 athletes from the provinces of Bolzano, Trento and Belluno at the start. The association brings together athletes from the three Dolomite provinces who are not only dedicated to the competitive practice of the discipline, but also to learning fencing as a historical martial art, especially from the Venetian and Low German schools.
