Hörmann on CAS rulings: “Slap in the face of clean sport”

Cologne (SID) DOSB President Alfons Hörmann described the annulment of the verdicts against 28 Russian athletes by the International Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) as a “slap in the face of clean sport”. The decision once again shows how difficult it is to "enforce tough and deserved sanctions in the anti-doping fight in court," said the President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. Hörmann considers the verdict to be "highly unsatisfactory" because it means that the "demonstrably existing and completely unacceptable state doping system in Russia cannot be punished with the necessary severity." The fact that not even the individual bans of numerous athletes appear to be legally tenable "regrettably" also suggests that the complete exclusion of the Russian team, which has been widely demanded, would in no way have been legally enforceable, added Hörmann. However, the CAS emphasized that it only looked at individual cases. Hörmann still hopes that none of the affected Russian athletes will take part in the Winter Games in Pyeongchang (February 9th to 25th). "We believe it is right that the IOC, in the interests of a tough anti-doping fight, refers to its house rules despite the CAS decision and very much hope that it proves to be legally enforceable not to invite the previously banned athletes to Pyeongchang," said Hörmann: "It would be fatal if those who demonstrably manipulated in Sochi now again deprive the fair-playing athletes of the fruits of their decades of work in Pyeongchang." Hörmann now fears a “long-lasting legal dispute with years of ambiguity, including for the athletes who would have to retroactively get into the medal ranks for Sochi.” This is “really bad news for world sport” and shows that “things like those in Russia have to be prevented from the outset through more professionalism at WADA.”
