The Olympic Games in Rio will begin in a year

The final countdown for the event has long since begun, as there are only 365 days left until the start in Rio. Next year there will be competition for gold, silver and bronze in 28 sports (two more than in London 2012) and a total of 42 disciplines. The competitions will take place in Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracana, four districts of Rio. Preparations for the games are in full swing and, according to the organizing committee, are progressing very well. A year before the start of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Park and the Olympic Village are already over 80 percent completed. However, the host is also struggling with problems, most of which are related to the contamination of the waters around Rio de Janeiro. The World Health Organization is particularly concerned about the waters of Baia di Guanabara, where the sailing competitions are planned. It has already instructed the International Olympic Committee to carry out controls to determine the threat of the prevailing viruses in the waters.

Location determined for the “Casa Italia”. The Italian team has already found its accommodation for the Olympic Games. The Azzurri Olympic Committee has chosen the Costa Brava Clube, located between Barra de Tijuca and Sao Conrado, as “Casa Italia”. As of today, 44 Italian athletes already have tickets for Rio 2016 in their pockets, but the number of participants will continue to increase until the games start.

South Tyrol's medal chances South Tyrol's hottest prospects for a medal in Rio are Tania Cagnotto (diving) and Petra Zublasing (sport shooting). The primary goal, however, is to send the same number of local athletes to Brazil as to London in 2012 (eight nominations and seven participants). After Tania Cagnotto narrowly missed out on a South Tyrolean medal with two fourth places in 2012, they are secretly hoping to be able to celebrate a local medal again next year. Cagnotto could also have the honor of becoming the flag bearer of the Italian team at the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics. The Bolzano diver will end her great career after the 2016 Games.

The Olympic Games in Rio will begin in a year

On August 5, 2016, the fire for the 31st Summer Olympic Games will be lit in Rio de Janeiro. From a South Tyrolean perspective, people are also looking forward to Brazil and are hoping for a local medal, which failed to materialize at the 2012 London Games.
