Indonesia wants to host the Summer Games in 2032

Jakarta (SID) Indonesia wants to try to host the 2032 Summer Olympics. President Joko Widodo announced this on Saturday shortly before the end of the Asian Games in the Southeast Asian country. “Indonesia plans to register as a candidate immediately,” Widodo said after speaking to Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). "Thanks to our experience from the 18th Asian Games, I believe Indonesia can host an even bigger event," said Widodo. The 40-sport Asian Games took place in the capital Jakarta and Palembang over the past two weeks, with the biggest sporting event in Indonesia's history ending on Sunday. Bach spoke of an "impressive" event, "the IOC would therefore really welcome Indonesia's candidacy for 2032." For the Olympics in 14 years, Indonesia could compete with a German bid: the Rhein Ruhr City initiative is pushing forward a possible candidacy. The 2020, 2024 and 2028 Summer Games will take place in Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles. Even as Europe becomes tired of the Olympics, Asia is already playing an increasingly important role for the IOC, as three winter and summer games in just four years (Pyeongchang 2018, Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022) prove this. Indonesia stepped in late to host the 2018 Asian Games after Vietnam withdrew in 2014 due to financial problems. Nevertheless, the competition venues were ready on time and the event for around 17.000 athletes and officials took place without any major problems. Nevertheless, the Asian Games also gave rise to criticism. Thousands of fans were unable to follow the competitions live due to chaotic conditions when it came to ticket sales, and many seats remained free in the sports facilities.
