IOC: Russia is not allowed to take part in the closing ceremony with its own flag

Pyeongchang (SID) Russia's athletes are not allowed to march under their own flag at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. However, the executive branch of the International Olympic Committee promised to lift the suspension of the Russian National Olympic Committee after the Winter Games in Pyeongchang if no more positive samples emerge. A corresponding executive decision was unanimously adopted by the IOC session on Sunday morning in Pyeongchang. "The IOC had considered lifting the suspension against Russia. However, two athletes violated the doping guidelines at the Games, which was very disappointing and prevented the IOC from lifting the suspension," said IOC President Thomas Bach before the Vote said. He was referring to the doping cases of curler Alexander Krushelnitsky and bobsleigh pilot Nadezhda Sergeyeva. Nicole Hoevertsz, the chairwoman of the IOC Russia Observer Group, had previously made a corresponding recommendation to the executive branch. The IOC member from Aruba praised the "Olympic athletes from Russia" and their delegation for exemplary and exemplary behavior in Pyeongchang. She described the two doping violations as “isolated individual cases” that indicate “no organized activity.” Nevertheless, the cases were decisive in the recommendation to maintain the suspension. "We wanted to see Russian athletes with their own flag at the closing ceremony. Unfortunately, this was not possible," said Hoevertsz. The IOC suspended Russia's NOC because of the state doping scandal surrounding the games in Sochi four years ago.
