Crazy fan campaign: 20.000 kilometers by bike to the Rugby World Cup

Two rugby fans went on a special adventure for a good cause. Ron Rutland (South Africa) and James Owens (Great Britain) were on the road for 231 days and collected 75.000 euros for the charity partner of the Rugby World Cup in Japan, which begins on Friday (12.45 p.m. CEST). The two arrived in Tokyo just in time for the hosts' opening game against Russia.

“We had an incredible 231 days, people in Europe and Asia were incredible to us. We arrived in Tokyo, the memories will stay with us for the rest of our lives. It’s a shame it’s over,” Owens said. Their journey began at the end of January at Twickenham Stadium in London and led, among other places, to Turkey, Iran and India to Japan.

Rutland reported that people were particularly helpful and that they were given water and fruit “countless, countless times.” They spent the night in a monastery in Myanmar or with families in Tajikistan, and they always pitched their tent when the weather permitted.

After arriving in Japan, the pair handed over the money to Welsh referee Nigel Owens, who will officiate the opening match. The amount goes to disadvantaged children. “Their epic journey may be over, but hundreds of children now have the chance to play, learn and grow through rugby. “Thank you to Ron Rutland and James Owens,” the organization said.
