Japan wants to further reduce foreign Olympic participants

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said this in parliament on Wednesday and reiterated his decision to go ahead with the games as planned despite widespread rejection among his own population. According to observers, he hopes that the games will be held successfully despite the pandemic and that this will give him momentum for elections later this year. Opposition criticizes sharply “I would like to send a message from Japan that the world has faced the difficulties brought by the coronavirus and overcome them through unity,” Suga said. However, the opposition sharply criticized the move and accused the head of government of not being fully aware of the risks. The government, the Olympic organizers and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), however, repeatedly assure that the games will be “safe and secure” for all participants and citizens. For this purpose, foreign fans were banned from the games. The initial number of Olympic participants of around 180 people has been halved, but according to Suga, Japan wants to further reduce the number of officials, employees and journalists coming from abroad. The games are scheduled to open on July 000 in Tokyo. They had been postponed by a year due to the global pandemic. Nevertheless, the vaccination process in the host country started much later and slower than in other countries. The government is only now in the process of accelerating it, but the majority of the population will not be vaccinated by the time of the Games. Suga promised on Wednesday that all citizens who want it will be vaccinated by November.
