Johanna Schnarf and Dominik Windisch are South Tyrol's athletes of the year

The athlete election is carried out by the daily newspaper “Dolomiten” in collaboration with Südtiroler Sporthilfe – the readers of “Dolomiten” have chosen the ski racer Johanna Schnarf as athlete of the year. Biathlete Dorothea Wierer and figure skater Carolina Kostner took second and third place.

In the men's category, biathlete Dominik Windisch came out on top. The two-time medalist at the PyeongChang Olympics relegated ski star Dominik Paris and tennis professional Andreas Seppi to places of honor.

Second title for Schnarf

Curious detail on the side: After the polemic surrounding the controversial nomination of Johanna Schnarf at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the Olanger woman was named athlete of the year. At the Winter Games in PyeongChang 2018 there were also polemics about Schnarf, who surprisingly was not selected for downhill skiing - and the 33-year-old was once again named athlete of the year.

Lifetime achievement awards

Manuela Mölgg (ski), Verena Stuffer (ski), Patrick Thaler (ski), Florian Eisath (ski) and Christoph Mick (snowboard) were honored for their great achievements in top-class sport. All five athletes ended their careers this year. Not only was the stage in the Merano Kurhaus packed with top-class people, the audience stands were also packed with former and current South Tyrolean sports stars.

At the “Ball des Sports” in the venerable Kursaal in Meran on Friday evening, South Tyrol’s Athletes of the Year 2017 were named.
