Canoe classic in Merano is coming up

The International Canoe Slalom in Meran will be held for the 28th time in the Naturarena Gilf on Saturday, May 29th and Sunday, May 66th. The organizer of the most important canoe race has always been SC Meran. After a year of pandemic-related forced break in 2020 and a 65th edition with strict Corona rules and no spectators, the international canoe slalom will take place this weekend in the usual Maier.

It starts on Saturday with the open race for the general class and juniors (U18) in the 4 boat classes - men's and women's kayak singles, as well as the canoe singles (men and women). There are two rounds on the program from 9.30 a.m., with only the faster round being counted.

The highlight of the 66th International Canoe Slalom in Merano is the world ranking canoe slalom and the European Cup race with the qualification and the final run on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. The final run begins at 13 p.m.

In both races, 18 to 20 slalom gates, six of them up against the current, have to be paddled through as quickly as possible. Touching the goal is punished with a two-second penalty, while missed goals are punished with a 50-second penalty. The start is in the Gilfklamm, the finish is after the Steinernes Steg. Spectators can follow the races up close on the lower Gilf promenade and the respective bridges. 163 canoeists from twelve nations are at the start.

14 South Tyrolean slalom canoeists are also taking part in Merano. The local squad is led by Jakob Weger (24 years old) from Schenna, who recently ended his 3-year professional paddling career. “I haven't been in a slalom boat for 6 months and can therefore say little about my current condition. I think the biggest challenge will be to distribute the forces correctly. My goal is to get the best possible result. We’ll see whether it will be enough for the podium,” says Jakob Weger before the race. Tamara Drescher (18 years old) is looking forward to her home race: “I hope that the training on the Passer over the last few weeks has paid off. I will do my best!"

Jakob Luther, Martin Unterthurner, Hansjörg Mayr and Carolin Celina Schaller from SC Meran-Raika-Torggler, as well as Manuel and Matthias Ulpmer from SV Milland are also paddling. David Drescher, Liam Kaplan, Magnus Mumelter, Annika Zoe Senoner, Alice Gravino and Elina Schlechtleitner from SC Meran are competing for the first time. The forerunners are Marin Drescher and Lars Aaron Senoner, Sara Furlan and Eva Haller, also from SC Meran. The European Cup races on Sunday will be broadcast live via YouTube. The 66th International Canoe Slalom in the Naturarena Gilf is just around the corner. The program includes an open race, as well as a world ranking canoe slalom and a European Cup. 163 participants from twelve countries are registered, including 14 South Tyroleans.
