IOC reviews Olympic invitations for 15 Russians

Pyeongchang (SID) The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will examine a possible Olympic invitation for 28 of these athletes to Pyeongchang after the lifting of the lifelong doping bans against 13 Russian winter athletes by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The IOC announced this on Saturday. Two more of these 28 people could receive an invitation as trainers. The remaining 13 athletes are no longer active and are therefore out of the question to start in Pyeongchang anyway. "We will consider each of these cases individually before making a decision," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Saturday. The review, which is intended to provide legal protection for the IOC, is carried out by an IOC committee chaired by the former French sports minister Valerie Fourneyron. Alfons Hörmann, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), reacted frustratedly to the news from Pyeongchang. "New bad news for our athletes follows every day - that's more than regrettable," said Hörmann: "It would be fatal if the fraudsters from Sochi were now allowed to compete again in Pyeongchang. We can only hope that the IOC with its tough The line remains the same and the appointed commission votes against admitting the Russian athletes to Sochi." Valerie Fourneyron had already headed the IOC commission that eliminated 500 from the pool of 111 Russian athletes who could possibly be invited to South Korea. Fourneyron will now also handle the 15 current cases. These people were not initially included in the comprehensive individual case reviews because these athletes had been sorted out from the outset by the so-called Oswald Commission. Meanwhile, in unrelated cases, the appeals of six Russian winter athletes before the Swiss Federal Court against their lifelong Olympic bans were rejected. The IOC refused to include these six athletes, including five-time speed skating world champion Pavel Kulishnikov, in the invitation list of "Olympic athletes from Russia" for Pyeongchang because they were involved in doping cases during their careers. In addition to Kulishnikov, Denis Yuskov, Tatjana Borodulina (both speed skating), Irina Starych, Alexander Loginow (both biathlon) and ski jumper Dimitri Vasiliev are affected.

Three days after the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) lifted the lifelong doping bans against 28 Russian winter athletes, the International Olympic Committee declared 13 of these Russians generally eligible to compete in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (February 9th to 25th).
