After allegations of abuse: head of the British Gymnastics Association resigns

Jane Allen announced on Tuesday that she would resign from her position in December. All were accused of leading an association that repeatedly failed to process complaints. The allegations became widespread in July, when world-class gymnasts Becky and Ellie Downie complained about an “environment of fear and mental abuse” in British gymnastics. “This never-ending focus on my weight has left deep scars that I believe will never be healed,” wrote Ellie (21) in a statement from the two sisters at the time. Allen, 65, described the latest developments on Tuesday as "extremely difficult" and stressed her support for an independent investigation that was launched in August. “The last few months have been extremely difficult, but I will look back with pride on my time at British Gymnastics, where we have achieved ten years of growth and success,” she said. Allen took over the position in 2010 after 13 years in a similar position in the Australian association. British gymnasts won seven medals at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Even before the Downie sisters' letter, there had been media reports that girls as young as seven had suffered physical and psychological damage.
