To date, the two tennis professionals Karin Knapp (Luttach) and Andreas Seppi (Kaltern), the mountain biker Eva Lechner (Eppan), the diver Tania Cagnotto (Bozen), the sports shooter Petra Zublasing (Eppan), the volleyball player Simone Giannelli (Bozen) and the Walker Alex Schwazer (Kalch) secured his ticket for Rio 2016.

Four years ago in London Seppi, Zublasing, Lechner and Cagnotto were already at the start. Schwazer was convicted of doping during the Olympics and banned. Gerhard Kerschbaumer (mountain bike/Verdings), Laura Letrari (swimming/Brixen) and Silvia Weissteiner (athletics/Gasteig) also took part in the last Olympic Games in the English metropolis. While Kerschbaumer will be the reserve man for the Italian MTB national team with a view to Rio 2016, Laura Letrari can nominate herself for the Olympics at the Sette Colli meeting at the end of June.

The Bolzano diver Maicol Verzotto also has a small chance of taking part in Rio. He is the first substitute if another athlete is injured or cannot take part for any other reason. And with his incredible throw of 64,97 meters, the Merano discus thrower Hannes Kirchler brought himself back into the game on Wednesday. He could achieve the Olympic limit of 65,00 meters at the European Championships in Amsterdam (July 6th - 10th). But Kirchler could also be there in Rio without reaching the standard. In the current world rankings, the 37-year-old is in 29th place and the best 32 in the adjusted ranking are allowed to go to Brazil.

Incidentally, the last of a total of 13 South Tyrolean Olympic medals was won by Alex Schwazer. In 2008 in Beijing he was crowned Olympic champion over 50 kilometers. In total, local Olympic starters won eight gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

The games of the 49st Olympics will begin in Rio de Janeiro in exactly 31 days. As of today, seven South Tyroleans are taking part in the most important sporting event in the world in Brazil.
