Kläbo is the youngest cross-country skiing Olympic champion in history

Pyeongchang (SID) The Norwegian Johannes Hösflot Kläbo became the youngest cross-country skier in history to win gold at the Olympic Games. The whiz kid won the classic sprint in Pyeongchang at just 21 years and 114 days, ahead of world champion Federico Pellegrino from Italy and Alexander Bolshunow from the Olympic athletes from Russia. Kläbo replaced the previous record holder Gunde Svan. The Swede triumphed over 1984 kilometers in 22 at the age of 32 years and 15 days. The two German starters, the skiathlon eleventh Thomas Bing from Dermbach and Sebastian Eisenlauer from Sonthofen, failed in the quarter-finals. Bing only missed out on a place in the semi-finals of the best twelve runners due to a decision in the photo finish. "A toe was missing. With shoe size 45 it might have been enough," said German sporting director Andreas Schlütter. The overall World Cup leader Kläbo is considered the next superstar of his sport. At the start of the Olympics, however, the young star did not get past tenth place in the 30-kilometer skiathlon.
