Only the crowning glory is missing: Italy's fistball players inspire in Kaltern

Imperial weather, fans from various European countries, spectacular games and a great atmosphere: the European Fistball Championship in the middle of the Altenburg Forest in Kaltern was a complete success. On Sunday the final games took place on the football pitch in Überetscher Weindorf. Unsurprisingly, the team from Germany took the crown.

In the final, the Germans had the upper hand against their eternal rivals Austria 4-1. The industry leader's victory was well deserved, as the final was only even in the third set, which Austria won 11:9. The remaining sections went 11:7, 11:6, 11:7 and 11:7 clearly to the black, red and gold fistballers, who had the outstanding player of the tournament in their ranks with 1,99 meter batsman Patrick Thomas . This was the 15th European Championship title for Germany. Azzurri fight bravely but miss out on a medal Italy ended up in fourth place in the final ranking. After the Azzurri, who consist exclusively of players from SSV Bozen, had to admit defeat against tournament winners Germany in the semi-finals on Saturday , the game for third place against Switzerland was on Sunday. Although the sun caused midsummer heat in the Altenburg Forest, numerous spectators came and created a special atmosphere. This atmosphere even turned into euphoria after the first set, as the local heroes won it 3:11. This meant that the first set win at this European Championship against one of the three top nations was over and some people were probably already starting to dream of a sensation.

However, the favored Switzerland then remembered its strengths and secured the following four sections with 11:3, 11:9, 11:5 and 11:8. The performance of the Swiss batsman Raphael Schlattinger was outstanding, as he repeatedly hit extremely precise shots with a very narrow or flat angle. But Armin Runer, Azzurri batsman, also had a great match, as did his teammates Simon Prudenziati, Fabian Obexer, Valentin Schwarz, Thomas Meran and Christian Scartezzini. Young man Jakob Riegler also made short appearances. The Azzurri, provided by SSV Bozen, were able to inspire, but the coronation - i.e. the medal - was denied. The hunt for precious metal continues, because Runer & Co. have never won a European Championship medal. This resulted in 4th place for the seventh time. Another highlight awaits In the morning, the game for 7th place was won by the Czech Republic against Belgium 3:1 (9:11, 11:9, 11:7, 11:8) and the match for 5th place by Denmark against Serbia was also won by 3:1 (8:11 , 11:9, 12:10, 11:9). The next fistball highlights this year are the World Games (of non-Olympic sports) in Birmingham in Alabama (USA) and the 2023 World Cup in Mannheim in mid-July. The Bolzano fistball players will once again be taking part in both major events.
