Olympics 2026: Turin and Milan's application becomes concrete

The national Olympic committee CONI has officially expressed its interest in a candidacy of the two northern Italian metropolises, including the Dolomites region, in a letter to the IOC.

CONI said on Thursday that it would submit a feasibility study carried out at the beginning of 2018 to the new Italian government, which has yet to be formed in Rome, for application. According to CONI, the Olympic project will bring benefits to all of Italy. The decision on the host of the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics will be made in September 2019 at the IOC session in Milan.

Two winter games have so far taken place in Italy In October 2016, political disputes led to the end of Rome's bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Rome's mayor Virginia Raggi from the Five Star Movement was particularly bitterly opposed to a candidacy. To date, Italy has hosted the Winter Games twice, in 1956 with Cortina d'Ampezzo and in 2006 with Turin.

So far, Stockholm (Sweden), Calgary (Canada), Sapporo (Japan) and Sion (Switzerland) have expressed interest in the 2026 Games. However, Sion still has to survive the citizen survey in the canton of Valais in June. Sapporo is unlikely to have much of a chance because the 2018 games took place in Asia (Pyeongchang/South Korea) and will also be held there in 2022 (Beijing). The IOC recently confirmed that it wanted to host the 2026 Games again in a traditional winter sports nation.
