Olympic starters should be vaccinated

“A large majority of the athletes’ village will be vaccinated,” said IOC spokesman Mark Adams. In addition to the athletes, this also includes the coaches and supervisors who will live in the Olympic village during the games. The IOC is currently “working at full speed to help athletes who want to be vaccinated,” assured Adams. At the beginning of the month, the IOC announced an agreement with Biontech and Pfizer to supply vaccines for Olympic delegations. Delivery of the first doses of the vaccine is scheduled to begin at the end of May. The donation of vaccine doses for top athletes will not affect the supply of national populations, Adams reiterated. It remains unclear whether vaccinated Olympians will receive greater freedom than unvaccinated people during their stay in Tokyo. So far, strict corona restrictions, daily tests and the establishment of an Olympic bubble are planned. The athletes have to leave Tokyo no later than two days after their competitions. According to the IOC, 7.800 athletes have so far qualified for the Summer Games. This means that more than 70 percent of the total 11.000 participants have been confirmed. By June 29th, a further 20 percent of the places should be filled via ranking lists and ten percent via outstanding qualifying competitions. “We are moving forward at full speed. The games can and will happen,” Adams said.
