Orienteers strong at Italian championships

Savona was initially the venue for the Italian Sprint Relay Championships. The “Scudetto” was awarded in this discipline for the first time, but this competition format has been used at world championships for several years. The sprint relay is run in city or park areas. Another special feature is that the relays are made up of both men and women, which means that at least one woman must take part in each three-person relay.

Due to the long journey, the South Tyrolean clubs did not arrive in full. However, SC Meran was able to secure the Italian championship title in the Masters category: Simone Grassi, Ingemar Neuhauser and Christine Kirchlechner were able to celebrate a clear victory.

On Sunday an Italian Cup race was held at Monte Beigua, in the mountains above Genoa. In challenging terrain at 1200 m above sea level and in persistent rain and cold, a lot was demanded of the runners. The adverse conditions did not cause any problems for Christine Kirchlechner; after a few minor mistakes in the first part of the race, she ran superiorly and was able to secure another victory.

The two South Tyrolean victories in the youth categories are also important: Vera Chiusole (SC Meran) won in the category for girls up to 16 and Lukas Patscheider (Terlan orienteer) in the category for boys up to 18. Oleg Anuchkin (TOL, 1 . M50) and Ingemar Neuhauser (SCM) were successful, with the latter winning ahead of his club colleague Simone Grassi. There were further podium places for Ernesto Rampado (TOL, 2nd M70) and Elisabeth Gruber (TOL, 3rd W65).
