Paralympics ended: closing ceremony without North Korea

A few minutes earlier, Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), had officially declared the Games over. The next Winter Paralympics will take place in Beijing in 2022.

"The athletes have shown that with a strong mind and a strong heart, extraordinary things are possible," said Parsons, who in his speech called the late physicist Stephen Hawking an "inspiration to us all."

The USA was by far the most successful nation in Pyeongchang with a total of 36 medals (13-15-8) after 80 competitions. The neutral Paralympic athletes from Russia (24/8-10-6), Canada (28/8-4-16) and France (20/7-8-5) were placed ahead of Germany.

North Korea not included The closing ceremony took place without North Korean participation. The 20-member delegation had already left, the IPC announced on Sunday morning. No reasons were given. A volunteer carried the North Korean flag during the invasion of the nations. In contrast to the Olympics, there was no joint entry by North and South Korea at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics. North Korea took part in the Paralympics for the first time. At the Olympics, North and South Korea marched together at the opening ceremony and then separately behind their own flags at the closing ceremony. Both countries also had a joint women's ice hockey team.

The games in Pyeongchang attracted a record number of spectators. A total of 343.000 tickets were sold. In Sochi 2014, 316.200 fans came to the competitions, in Turin in 2006 there were just half that number (162.974).
