Paralympics: Games in Tokyo will take place without spectators

As expected, the organizers decided this on Monday at a meeting with the International Paralympic Committee, the Tokyo government and the central government. Spectators were also largely excluded from the recently concluded Olympic Games for the same reason. However, there will be exceptions for schoolchildren at the Paralympics. They are allowed to watch competitions in arenas at the Paralympics as part of a government education program if local school authorities request this in consultation with parents. During the Paralympics, around 4.400 athletes from around 160 countries will compete for medals. Because of the worsening corona infection situation, Japan wants to extend the state of emergency in Tokyo and five other regions again and expand it to seven additional prefectures. The Japanese government wants to impose a state of emergency until September 12th and thus until after the end of the Paralympics, as Japanese media reported on Monday. The government will officially decide this on Tuesday. Everyone must remain “vigilant”. At the start of the meeting of Paralympics organizers, IPC President Andrew Parsons said the Olympic Games that recently ended in Tokyo had shown that the Games can be held safely despite the pandemic. The measures to protect the participants and the population worked, said Parsons. Nevertheless, one should not become careless with regard to the Paralympics. Everyone must remain “vigilant” and follow the rules. Meanwhile, a judoka from Georgia is threatened with exclusion from the Paralympics starting on August 24th in Tokyo because of rioting. As the Japanese television station TBS reported on Monday, the disabled athlete, who was staying in a quarantine hotel, is said to have pushed a security guard under the influence of alcohol and broken one of his ribs. The police were then alerted, it was said. The National Olympic Committee of Georgia confirmed the “dishonorable incident”.
