Peter Fill and Tania Cagnotto are South Tyrol's athletes of the year

At the anniversary event - the South Tyrolean athlete election was carried out for the 30th time by the daily newspaper "Dolomiten" in collaboration with Südtiroler Sporthilfe - the two-time downhill World Cup winner prevailed for the second time after 2016 - and, as in the previous year, ahead of his teammate and Kitzbühel -Downhill winner Dominik Paris. Third place went to volleyball star Simone Giannelli, who was represented by father Paolo Giannelli at the Ball des Sports evening in the Merano Kurhaus. Simone Giannelli will be in action with his home club Diatec Trentino against Perugia in the decisive game 5 of the volleyball semi-finals of the Italian championship on Saturday.

Cagnotto crowns an outstanding last year of competition In the women's category, there could only be one winner - diver Tania Cagnotto crowned her extraordinary final year of competition with her second title of Female Athlete of the Year (she won in 2), after winning two medals at the 2010 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. There, the winner of 2016 (!) medals at major international events (Olympics, World Cup and European Championships) won silver with her partner Francesca Dallapé in synchronized jumping and bronze on the 2m board.

Behind Cagnotto was natural track luger Greta Pinggera, an outsider, while Alexia Runggaldier, the biathlon climber of the year, came third.

For his great career, toboggan legend Armin Zöggeler was awarded the sporting life's work.

Not only was the stage in the Merano Kurhaus packed with top-class people, the audience stands were also packed with former and current South Tyrolean sports stars. A large number of the previous South Tyrolean athletes of the year (including Denise Karbon, Hanna Schnarf, Armin Zöggeler, Josef Polig, Peter Runggaldier) were honored, as were the South Tyrolean athletes of the century, Gustav Thöni and Isolde Kostner.
