Russia officially objects to doping ban

"Today we sent a whole series of documents to WADA. Including the message that we do not accept the sanctions," said Yuri Ganus, head of the Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA, on Friday. There is now a months-long legal battle that could last until the Olympic Games in Tokyo (July 24th to August 9th).

Russia had already announced this step last week. The further procedure stipulates that WADA must appeal to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to enforce the sanctions. Since the objection has a suspensive effect, the sanctions do not initially become legally binding.

Ganus, who has gained attention in recent weeks and months as a critic of the Russian sports system and sports officials, also wrote his own letter to WADA in which he made his personal attitude clear. "It is with regret that I inform you that all my attempts to bring about changes to the RUSADA notice have failed," he wrote. He also told the French news agency AFP that it was "practically impossible" to take action against WADA's ban.

Objection could result in even harsher sanctions The next step is not without risk for Russia. The CAS could even impose harsher sanctions than WADA. “There is this possibility,” said Ganus, who also stated that his counterparts from the USA and Great Britain in particular could speak out in favor of it.

On December 9th, WADA decided on far-reaching sanctions against Russia due to manipulation of data from the Moscow control laboratory. In addition to the suspension of RUSADA, Russia as a nation is, among other things, prohibited from participating in or hosting certain major sporting events such as the Olympic Games or World Championships. However, Russian athletes are allowed to start in these events as “neutral athletes” under certain conditions.
